I went out in search of early season bass, but they were uncooperative. More importantly, I caught four beautiful Mendon Ponds pike in 100 Acre Pond, and got to spend time with 4 other members of the WNYKFA. It was a great morning.

First pike of the season

First pike of the season

This first one hit about 5 minutes after I put the boat in the water, so right around 9:20 AM. He took the spinnerbait right at the boat, then ran away from me for a few seconds before I brought him in. A good pike 5 minutes into your first trip of the year has to be a good sign, right?

The 3rd nice pike of the morning.

The 3rd nice pike of the morning.

This one hooked on much later in the morning, probably towards noon. It was actually my third of the day, and probably my favorite. He hit a ways out, and put up a pretty decent fight (for a pike).

Got them all on the baitcaster, even though I tried quite a bit with the fly rod.

A great day overall. We didn’t catch a ton of fish, but I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation, and meeting some new folks. Can’t beat that.
