The WNYKFA outing to Loon Lake on Sunday was fun and productive. Among the three of us who went, we managed to catch a total of 7 largemouth bass, 2 smallmouth bass, 7 chain pickerel, 1 yellow perch, and 1 bluegill.
Alan and his first catch of the day, a chain pickerel.
We arrived at the Laf-A-Lot boat launch at 9:30am and were on the water before 10am. Throughout the day, the wind came and went. We proceeded first by testing the coves and eventually were able to round the entire lake.
The first fish caught were small chain pickerel, but after a bit more work, Kevin found the bass.

We noticed a definite pattern by the end of the day. Of the several coves that we investigated there appeared to be much variation in the water temperatures. Some coves were cooler (55-59 degrees) and others were noticeably warmer (60-63 degrees). The bass were found in and around the warmer coves. The fish also appeared to bite best on dark colored plastics.
For a good portion of the day, we kept commenting about the appearance of seemingly great habitat for smallmouth bass. However, everything that we had read about Loon Lake did not mention them as a species found there. Sure enough, we caught them at one of the likely looking locations.
Kevin caught the first smallie of the day too.
For me, it was the most enjoyable kayak angling trip of the year so far. I got to hang out with a couple of excellent fellow anglers, my son Alan, and Kevin, and I managed to catch some fish including a really nice smallmouth. We paused fishing for lunch at the Laf-A-Lot restaurant (at the boat launch) and found the food to be great and a good value.
I didn't catch any other bass for the day, but this nice smallie made up for it!
Kevin captured the smallmouth action on video.
The fishing at Loon Lake was good and we were happy to catch the diversity of fish that we did. Although we didn’t catch any, we saw two tiger muskies and Alan had one follow his lure. We would definitely recommend a kayak fishing trip to Loon Lake in Cohocton, NY, and will probably make a return trip ourselves in the near future. We hope that fellow WNY Kayak Fishing Association members will join us. It’s free to become a member, so sign up to receive notice about future trips!
