Freshwater Kayak Fishing Popularity

in Kayak Bass Fishing

Ever since I bought my Manta Ray fishing kayak in 2007, I was curious as to whether I was a local pioneer, a global pioneer, or just another fisherman with a kayak. I know I hadn’t seen many around, but now, knowing the spots I like to go in Western New York, it’s not surprising that I didn’t. We tend to hit the “fine and far off” places where your average shore fisherman can’t get to. So fishing from shore, I wouldn’t have seen the smart yakkers anyhow.

But was I really a pioneer? According to Google, I was.

Freshwater Kayak Fishing on Google

This graph points out the popularity of “freshwater kayak fishing” as a search term compared to the rest of searches google gets in the Recreation category.

So, we can see that there’s a DEFINITE up tick in May of 2009. That must be when Jim Sammons and his ilk really started to bring the sport to the fore front. Game On, The Kayak Fishing movie came out just ahead of that, so it might not be coincidental.

Kayak Fishing on Google

Now let’s compare that to kayak fishing in general, of which plenty of salt water guys were doing way ahead of us:

There we go. Lots of searches well ahead of the freshwater kayak fishing explosion in May of 2009.

Kayak Bass Fishing on Google by Comparison

So to help determine whether or not the freshwater explosion was really that recent, we add in “kayak bass fishing” as a comparison point. Here’s what we find when we lump all 3 together:

Hmmm. Kayak bass fishing picks up more searches, and earlier, than freshwater kayak fishing does, but it’s still dwarfed by the entire “kayak fishing” category.

Is this Kayak Fishing Search Data any Good?

There’s some flaws here though. For example, people freshwater kayak fishing may just search “kayak fishing” when they are on Google. The differentiation might not be made for a vast majority of searches. I’ll say this though, utilizing Google Insights for Search, where these two graphs come from, I’ve discovered key trends in my business, so I tend to believe the data I get from there almost implicitly.
