If you’re a fisherman, the World Fishing Network might be the best kept secret that you’re not in on. Launching in 2009, WFN is a new network showing nothing but fishing shows, as the name would imply.
Unfortunately, most local cable providers haven’t picked it up yet, so must of us are stuck watching the occasional fishing television show dribbled in between big game hunts in countries we’ve never heard of and countless hours of Ted Nugent interviews. The Kayak Fishing Show with Jim Sammons
Of particular note to kayak fishermen is the premier of Jim Sammon’s The Kayak Fishing Show, sponsored by Ocean Kayak. Since my cable provider (Time Warner, for those of you keeping score at home) doesn’t carry WFN, I haven’t had a chance to see it yet. Jim usually does a nice mix of saltwater and freshwater fishing, so I’m sure there will be plenty of content for those of us that don’t live on the two coasts.
Here’s the trailer:
I’ve had the good fortune of chatting with Jim online a handful of times, and he’s a guy that is both personable and knowledgeable. Who knows, schedules permitting, maybe we can get him out here to Western New York to do a show on our salmon runs, or big musky fishing. He’s a busy guy though, and more importantly, we need to spread the word about both the television network and his show so we can assure they’re both around long enough to make that happen.
A Little More About Jim Sammons
For those of you unfamiliar with Jim, he runs La Jolla Kayak Fishing, which is an outfit that guides in and around the San Diego Bay area, and elsewhere in the region. As I look out my window this morning to see 5 inches of snow, that sounds particularly inviting even though I’m not much of a saltie.
Some notes on Jim from his website:
Owner and guide Jim Sammons, a San Diego California native, has spent most of his life on or near the water. Receiving his first kayak as a gift over twenty years ago, he has never looked back. Starting La Jolla Kayak Fishing guide service in 1996, Jim has been on the leading edge of this fast growing sport. As a California Department of Fish and Game, licensed, and International Game fish Association certified guide Jim has all the qualifications you will need in a guide and instructor.
At La Jolla Kayak Fishing Adventures we want to share our passion for this sport with you. We offer local guided kayak fishing trips to La Jolla or San Diego Bay, Surf, Safety and Paddle skills classes and Eco tours to view the Gray whales during their migration.. For those looking to take the next step we have trips into Baja in search of big game from the kayaks.
Jim holds the distinction of landing the first, and only locally caught Marlin from a kayak, and has guided more clients onto Billfish from a kayak than any other guide in the world.
Call Your Cable Provider and Demand The World Fishing Network
In order to get this programming, we need to get the word out to our cable providers that we want it. So please, call yours today and ask that they add the World Fishing Network to their lineup. You might also add that we don’t watch 647 of the 1000 channels they’re already giving us, so they can probably find it in their hearts to get rid of a few, and add the ones we really want.
