New Fishgator Features

June 30th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Kayak Accessories

I just went out and purchased The Flip, a great little compact flash video recorder.  I’m looking forward to it, since I also got a mount, so taking video while fly fishing from the kayak will be simple and safe.  The mount also CAN go on my head, but we’ll see about that.

Here’s some information from Amazon about the Flip personal video camera:

The other accessory I have on order, but haven’t received yet, is a waterproof case for the Flip. I one I selected has been tested by consumers (through the reviews I saw at Amazon) to be completely waterproof, if used correctly and well maintained (lubricate the O rings, etc), to thirty feet. That covers most of my kayaking.

So soon, there will be plenty of video, some exciting, some not so exciting, for you to enjoy here at Fishgator.

I could write a lot about kayak fishing here to tell you what I love about it, or I could just ask you to press the play button below. It will then become self explanatory.

REI having their biggest annual sale

May 2nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Coupons, Kayak Accessories, Yakima Mounts

Just got an email from REI, indicating that from May 2nd through May 11th, they are having their biggest annual outdoors sale.

Two of the things that interested me about this sale were:

20% of all Yakima Racks and Car Top boxes. (no coupon necessary)

15% off all full price boats. (no coupon necessary)

If you would like to purchase anything else from the store that isn’t already on sale, you can use REI Coupon Code ANNV20 (that’s a zero, not an oh).

As far a Yakima goes, I personally use the Yakima Gunwhale mounts as well as their Yakima Crossbars.

This sale ends on May 11th, so get yours today!

How to choose what Kayak is right for you

April 30th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Kayak Accessories

REI, one of the larger online shops that sells kayaks, offered a decent article on selecting a good kayak.

A brief excerpt:

Whether you’re headed to a local lake for the day or off on an extended paddling tour, you’ll want to make sure you’ve chosen the boat that will let you get the most out of your time on the water. The information that follows will help you sort through the options for flat water paddling.

Expert Advice Image

Quick Read
  1. Determine your paddling-trip preferences (day trips, expeditions, family recreation) before selecting a boat.
  2. Choose a boat based on the type of paddling and water for which it was designed.
  3. Design and materials will affect how your kayak handles in various situations.
  4. Consider the important “extras” before purchasing your kayak.

Be sure to visit REI.com for the rest of the advice.

Unfortunately, they don’t include any information on fishing kayaks specifically, but from my experience, if you’re serious about the sport, the sit on top kayak is the way to go.  Look for one with a center console big enough to add a rod mount.  Here’s a full list of REI’s sit on top kayak accessories
