Black Lake Association

Just noticed this when I was looking for information on Black Lake (heading there this weekend).Black Lake, NY

Join the Black Lake Association

The Black Lake Association is a group of interested persons who enjoy our lake, many of whom are property owners around the lake, and some are folks who enjoy using the lake’s many fine resources. If you are a property owner, annual membership is $15.00. If you’re someone who enjoys visiting/fishing/boating/swimming in Black Lake then dues are just $5.00 per year.

I’ll be paying my dues when I’m up there for sure. I strongly suggest that anyone that has a vested interest in the health of Black Lake to do exactly the same. It’s one of New York’s true treasures, and needs to be protected.

NY Imposing an Internet Tax

May 15th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in NY, Uncategorized

As if we NY fishermen didn’t have enough to worry about (what with gas prices, and the rise in related goods and services costs because of it), your beloved state is looking at levying sales tax on all your internet purchases if the comapny you’re buying from has even a theoretical presence in New York.

Write your representative.  Quickly.

The Must Hit List for my Summer Kayak Fishing

Planning out my summer today, and here’s the first spot that I absolutely must fish this summer. (Also, I’ll be showing off a new kayaking toy very soon… stay tuned!)

The Lake Shores Marshes Wildlife Management Area

Website

The DEC indicates that this spot is rife with smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and Northern Pike, which definitely piqued my interest. Also, there appears to be a boat launch on a creek there (Black Creek actually, although not the one I’m familiar with).

The rest of this week is suspect, weather wise, so I will be doing this one next week.

Apparently also plenty of birds, muskrats, and other critters to look at while I’m paddling along, so I look forward to this trip. This will be a full day trip I would imagine, so I’ll keep you posted on when I go.

New York State Sport Fish Restoration Program

March 31st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Fishery Restoration, NY, WNY Fishing

Found this interesting… read it today.  We’re spending a lot of money chasing little fishes around.

Each year, more than a million anglers take to New York’s waters in the hopes of catching one or more of the state’s wide diversity of fish species. Trout, salmon, largemouth and smallmouth bass, pike, walleye, muskellunge, catfish, panfish, striped bass, bluefish, scup, black seabass, flounders and weakfish are just a few of the fish species found here.

Freshwater anglers annually take about 21 million fishing trips and spend $1.5 billion pursuing this sport. Saltwater anglers annually take about four million trips and spend more than one billion dollars.

Good News on the Ice Storm

March 5th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in NY, WNY Kayaking

For those of us that like to paddle Black Creek here in the Churchville/Wheatland area, good news came this morning in the form of a very light ice storm as opposed to the big one they were predicting. The Creek had enough portages last year, and last nights icing probably won’t add too many large downed trees and branches to that mix.

So, hopefully business as usual in a few weeks. I’ll try to get out and check this weekend to see how bad it looks.
