Oatka Report 4 22 2008

April 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Oatka Creek, WNY Fishing

Fished the Garbutt section for a little over over an hour today, from noon til almost 1:30.

Still have to shake some of the rust off, as I missed 3 fish on dry flies. The bugs that were in the air today included some nice sized Hendricksons and some much smaller Blue Winged Olives. Plenty of risers going after these tasty morsels.

I planned on getting some bug photos, but a few other residents caught my eye instead.

East Koy Creek 4 18 2008

Fished in Gainesville on Friday, since the Oatka was elbow to elbow in the trail section. (Amazing what 70 degree temperatures combined with the kids being off from school will do.)

The water in East Koy was in great shape, and there was bug activity for sure. Not heavy hatches or anything, but they were moving around. I had two nice strikes drifting an American march Brown just under the surface below me, but both fish missed.

It’s kind of a phone booth in that section (to borrow a Richard Brautigan term), but roll casting and paying close attention gets the job done. I was only able to spend a few hours on the water, as work still takes precedence, but it was very nice to be back out there.

First Trout Trip 2008

Finally going to get out tomorrow, up on the Trail section of the Oatka.  If you see a guy, a fly rod, and a camera, that’s me.

I’ll report back in the evening (I think*).  I also hope to take a new water flow video, and I think I learned a trick that might make it a little easier to see this time.  Weather has been good this week, so hopefully the water will be running nice tomorrow.

* I also have a retirement party to hit tomorrow afternoon, which may make my ability to report to you suspect at best.

More Rain, Rising Water

Oatka Creek Opening Day Water LevelWoke up to a good rain again this morning.  Considering water levels I saw yesterday, those of you that rush out Opening Day for trout better bring the chest waders.  Actually, the issue is more sluggish trout due to cold water.  maybe a nice warm rain will actually help for tomorrow.Mid day update:  Looks like the weather stayed relatively decent today.  Water may have dropped a bit.Word on the street though is a front blowing through tomorrow.I know that won’t keep some of the bridges and by ways from being elbow to elbow, targeting stocked browns on Oatka Creek, and some natives of course.
