Until the day is Done

June 27th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Black Lake

You don’t have to look far when you are out kayaking to see the effect man has on our environment…. Coolers floating by, styrofoam cups on shore, the pervasion/invasion of zebra mussels to Northeast waterways, etc…

I’m not one to say we need to stop doing everything, and go back to cave living. (Hell, I wonder how much pollution was created just in manufacturing my kayak). We should be mindful, however, of our lifestyle, and be even more mindful of the impact of the ramping up of the global community. As third world countries join the first world, these problems we create and face will get exponentially worse, unless kept in check. Have a look:

Just some food for thought.

Shaw and Tenney Paddles

May 12th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Kayaking News

Was reading Canoeandkayak.com today, and saw this gem:

Shaw & Tenney, the oldest manufacturer of oars and paddles in the U.S. and the third oldest manufacturer of marine products, turns 150 this year. Started in 1858 as a water-powered manufacturer on the Stillwater River in Orono, Maine, the company has moved twice within the same town and changed owners only three times.

I spent about a year in Orono, fishing the Penobscot River, and digging ditches. So Maine, and all of it’s good companies, will always hold a special place in my heart.  Old Town included.

Black Creek Churchville 5 6 2008 X marks the Spot

Also from that little feeder stream in Churchville. I’m digging through some maps trying to find the name of it.

This is just upstream of where I saw a pretty decent sized snapping turtle chewing on a carp skeleton. Not sure if he was responsible for killing the carp or no.

Found this little feeder stream above the dam in Churchville. I was surprised yesterday that I still don’t see nesting panfish or bass around yet. Might be a touch to early still?
